ROCIO MARTINEZ & JOHN BALLERINO CONCERT, APRIL 18, 8pm, LOTTE LEHMAN CONCERT HALL (UCSB, MUSIC DEPT)


Acclaimed Catalan soprano Rocío Martínez and UCSB faculty pianist Dr. John Ballerino present a selection of magnifi cent art songs by Catalan composers Morante, Toldrà, and Morera, as well as Mompou’s astonishing Combat del Somni.

Rocío Martínez has performed leading opera roles throughout Spain and France, including Despina in Così fan tutte, Queen of the Night in The Magic Flute, Olimpia and Antonia in Les contes d’Hoffmann, and many others. Future engagements include appearances with the Palau de les Arts of Valencia in Le nozze di Figaro, Iphigénie un Tauride with Plácido Domingo, L’Arbore di Diana, and Carmen. Rocío Martínez has won numerous awards and honors including First Prize in the Singing Pro-Medic Foundation Competition and a Medal in the Maria Canals’ Competition.

Dr. John Ballerino is a Vocal Coach and Lecturer in Collaborative Arts in the Department of Music at UCSB. He holds a DMA in Collaborative Arts from the University of Southern California, where he also studied Spanish and Latin American literature as part of his doctoral program. Dr. Ballerino is also on the music staff of the Sarasota and Santa Barbara Opera companies as well as the Jarvis Conservatory in Napa, California. Dr. Ballerino was recently chosen to be an official pianist for Placido Domingo’s world opera contest, OPERALIA.
